As part of my assessment, I interviewed a nurse who provided valuable insights into the issues and potential in the healthcare organization. Based on the interview, a report is prepared indicating an issue that could benefit from an interdisciplinary approach. In addition, the best practices are examined through available evidence to address this issue using change theories, leadership strategies, and collaboration approaches. 

Interview Summary

During the interview, I talked with Rose, a nurse and a team leader from United Hospital. As a senior nurse, her primary tasks include monitoring workflow, including task tracking and assignment, serving as the first point of contact for team inquiries and issues, and assisting new team members’ onboarding. She is also in charge of resolving unusual problems by working with team members, leadership, and other divisions within the hospital. During the interview, I used open-ended questions to enable the interviewee to provide in-depth responses, allowing for a wide range of answers and promoting comprehensive data gathering. Researchers frequently use open-ended questions because of their ability to generate comprehensive participant perspectives (Gaur et al., 2020).

A significant concern mentioned during the interview was the lack of effective communication between healthcare professionals and between nurses and patients. It happens particularly during periods of ongoing workflow and process modifications. She described that due to a lack of communication between interdisciplinary teams and nurses and patients in the emergency department, the process changes were not regularly conveyed immediately to all team members, resulting in confusion and disruptions in task completion and affecting patient safety. This affects the completion ability of work on time by creating confusion among team members.

To United Hospital has previously implemented communication training and interdisciplinary team meetings to address communication difficulties, but they were partially successful. The hospital promotes a collaborative atmosphere, particularly in the emergency department, where Rose’s broad interdisciplinary team expertise highlights the crucial significance of excellent communication in maintaining patient safety and operational efficiency.

Issue Identification

Lack of efficient communication among interprofessional teams and between nurses and patients is the primary cause of the high number of medical errors in any healthcare organization. Lack of communication, delayed diagnosis, redundant testing, prescription errors, and impaired patient outcomes can all result from insufficient information flow during care transitions. An interdisciplinary collaborative approach can deliver effective communication between healthcare departments, which is crucial for reducing the risks of limited information conveyed and improving overall patient care quality (Hlescu et al., 2019).

With the help of interprofessional team education and training programs, healthcare workers better know one another’s roles and responsibilities and learn how to interact with patients. These programs attempt to improve communication and collaboration among healthcare practitioners and nurse patients (Irajpour et al., 2019), eventually improving patient care and outcomes. 

Change Theories Leading to an Interdisciplinary Solution

The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) is a four-stage repetitive model for solving a problem or implementing a change. It involves planning a change, implementing it using all available resources and knowing the possible consequences, studying the results and effects on the stakeholders, and then acting on what was learned to improve further. It is a continuous cycle for refining any process and achieving better outcomes.

A study by Pan et al. (2022) advocates that by implementing this model, organizations can benefit from interprofessional teamwork in improving the overall quality of work. The change theories are the best practices that can improve an organization’s process and working behaviors. One such change theory was proposed by Lippitt in 1973. This theory consists of seven steps: Identify and diagnose the problem comprehensively by analyzing the possible consequences and determining the stakeholders.
